[COLOR=black][COLOR=black]WASHINGTON — Hyundai is recalling 531,894 vehicles. Among them are the 2006-'07 Accent, Entourage and Sonata, the 2007 Azera, Elantra and Santa Fe, the 2005-'07 Tucson and 2007-'08 Veracruz. The recall is to fix a faulty brake light, according to the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration.[/COLOR]
[COLOR=black]"The stop lamp switch in the affected vehicles maymalfunction," said NHTSAin its recall summary of the problem. "A malfunctioning stop lamp switch maycause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brakepedal is depressed ormay cause the brakelights to remain illuminated when the brake pedal isreleased.
"A stop lamp switch malfunction may affect the operation ofthebrake-transmission shift interlockfeature so the transmission shifter would notbe able to be shifted out of Park position. It may also cause theelectronicstability control malfunction lightto illuminate, and it may not deactivate thecruise control when the brake pedal is depressed."
The federal watchdog said the defect may "lead toa crash."
Hyundai dealers will replace the stop lamp switchfor free. The recall isexpected to beginsometime in April. Owners can contact Hyundai at (800) 633-5151.
