Saab will become the third General Motors brand to close this year. GM announced on Friday all attempts to sell the ailing Swedish brand have failed, forcing the Detroit automaker to shutter the division. GM has already announced it will wind down its Pontiac and Saturn brands.
The future of Saab fell into question last month as a proposed deal to sell the European brand to a group lead by Koenigsegg Group AB collapsed. Niche automaker Spyker tried to save Saab in the eleventh hour, but couldn’t pull the deal off in a timely manner. As a result, Saab will begin its wind down process immediately.
“Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this complex transaction could not be executed in a reasonable time. In order to maintain operations, Saab needed a quick resolution,” said GM Europe President Nick Reilly. “We regret that we were not able to complete this transaction with Spyker Cars. We will work closely with the Saab organization to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.”
GM says Saab will continue to honor all warranties and will provide global parts and service support.
At least part of Saab will live on as Chinese automaker BAIC has purchased the rights to the current 9-5 and previous-generation 9-3.
