Just when you thought it was 'adios Omega', Vauxhall has confirmed it will build a replacement for the executive car. And our the current mag's picture shows how it will look, with styling based on the Insignia concept unveiled at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The front end will be slightly toned down and the unusual sliding rear doors are set to disappear, but the Omega will definitely retain the bold profile and unusual rear end of the striking prototype. The car will debut at the 2007 Frankfurt show and Vauxhall hopes to have it in dealers by the end of that year.
And the Luton-based firm promises the newcomer will be the last word in refinement and luxury. Bosses have decided to pitch the car a class higher than their recently withdrawn predecessor, taking on the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6.
Underneath, it will use GM's new 'VE' platform, but retain the rear-wheel-drive layout of the old car. The chassis will also underpin the next version of the Monaro, along with several other models in GM's portfolio. A wide range of engines will be offered, with the most significant an all-new 6.0-litre V8 flagship, taken from Chevrolet's Corvette C6. Other petrol models will be a 3.2-litre V6, an all-new 2.8-litre V6 and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-charged unit.
Diesel choices will include both single and twin-turbo versions of the 1.9-litre CDTi, plus a modernised version of the 3.0-litre V6 from the Vectra and Signum. A US-developed V8 diesel is also a possibility. Expect prices to start around £25,000.
Does this mean that Opel is serious about Joining the ranks of German Luxo makers? I wonder what that means for future American version of Opel cars.
